european garden art
When you visit the east wing of French-style country castle "Bentrath" close to Dsseldorf at the river Rhine, you'll
get the chance to visit the beauty of parks and gardens all
over Europe. For almost one year the art-historian-team of
museum's director Gabriele Uerscheln was busy, not only to
reconstruct the old building with a budget of 12 million Euro,
but also to collect items and artwork related to European garden
art and take pictures and films of some of the most famous gardens
and parks in Europe.
In this report, we travel from France to Italy, from Germany to England,
to present some of the most interesting gardens from history to present
times, such as: the castle gardens of Villandry (Loire valley, France),
the first English Garden-Park on the continent in Wrlitz (Eastern Germany)
which was selected UNESCO world culture heritage in 2001, several "classical"
Italian gardens in Italy (Boboli, Bomarzo, Villa Lante) and one of the most
recent examples, Derek Jarman's "artist's garden" in Dungeness, Kent (UK).
