"It is not the best solution, it is the only solution!" I
had the chance to join Uri Avneri and his wife Rachel, representing
the radical peace-movement of Israel, Gush Shalom, on their
trip through Europe, delivering a powerful message of determined
peace-making:
"There have to be two independent states, Palestine and Israel,
devided by what we call the green line (Oslo Agreement), Jerusalem
has to be the capital of both states. The settlements, all
the settlements in the occupied Palestine territories have
to be evacuated. The Palestinian refugees have to be generously
compensated. They should receive general recognition and the
right to return to their homelands in Israel. Practically
there could be 50.000 refugees returning every year for a
period of ten years, without endangering the ethnical character
of Israel. But in reality it will be even hard to find enough
refugees who want to return..."
Uri Avneri, the controversial Israeli patriot is convinced,
that if there is to be ever an end to the war in the middle
east, it has to look like his proposal. "The only sad thing,
that many more people on both sides will loose their lives
as long as the politicians don't agree on this reasonable
proposal."
In the 40ies the German-born Jew who fled the Nazis as a child,
was a militant Zionist who fought the British occupation and
the Arabs. Later he was the first Knesset-member to meet Arafat.
And he promoted talks between the two sides. He just received
the alternative Nobel Prize for peace and I had the opportunity
to join this remarkable activist and his wife on their trip
to Bruxelles and Strasbourg where they presented their proposals
to the European institutions, claiming: Europe has to get
involved into this terrible conflict, supporting peace instead
of financing the settlements.
