marco's deportation
What does it need to become a German? Marco was borne in Germany. His parents happened to be immigrants from Italy. When his father left the family German authorities decided, that the mother would not be capable to raise her children, and took him away from home. Marco was raised by the state in foster care. There he was forced not to speak Italian anymore with his brother, so today he doesn't speak a word Italian at all - but because his parents came from Italy he still carries the Italian passport. This and strange immigration laws even for citizens of the European Union without border control between the member states are part of Marco's tragedy. Raised in the German foster care system and taken away by force from his loving mother, Marco became violent, when he realized the injustice already done to him, when he became a teenager. He would beat up people in the local Trains at Frankfurt and was finally sentenced for a violent attack and repeated harassments to 3 years in prison.
After his release from prison he promised to change, his mother rented a bar and he started his own business - until be became 18. Then one day, a swap team of several police officers in riot-gear stormed the place, demanding Marco to join them to be deported from Germany. His crime? That he committed a crime in his youth and that he turned 18 and still was carrying an Italian passport. There are laws to protect "the order" of Federal Republic of Germany, demanding "criminals" who have been sentenced to more than 3 years prison, to leave the country. Marco is unwanted in Germany and is brought "home".
I join him on his fourth or so deportation from Germany by plane. The so called "dangerous criminal" leaves the country unaccompanied, no police officer on the plane, it is ridiculous, if Germany considers Marco as the enemy of state, how could such a dangerous individual be permitted to border a civilian aircraft without any protection of the other passengers?
At the Italian border control, I - with my few words Italian and some Spanish - have to translate for him, the guy with Italian passport, why he does enter the country of his parents. The Italian authorities are not happy to see a person without money, without relatives, without home, without any knowledge of the language but with a valid Italian passport entering the country and only when Marco confirmed them to leave Italy with the next train, they let him go. That is what he does: he takes the next train to Frankfurt, going back to where he belongs, to Germany, the country which raised him, the country where he did his time in prison, the only home he has. There he has to live illegally, if the police gets hold of him, he will be deported again and again, put to prison for violation of immigration laws, what a country
