ICT IN AFRICA

Since high speed internet has arrived at the shores of Lake Victoria, the boom of ICT in East Africa has become visible to the rest of the world. For a couple of years now the region has embraced ICT as the future technology to move from an culture of receiving technology from the rest of the world to developers of technological solutions.

The Digital Africa Summit 2010 in Kampala has proven the dynamics of this industry in Africa. In some fields - like mobile money and emergency applications - Africa has become a trend-setter and developed powerful solutions spreading over the globe.

The 30min report follows the optical fiber cable from the port of Mombasa to the hills of Rwanda and meets charismatic movers and shakers of this new African industry. It shows how the Rwandan government invests heavily to transform the country from an agricultural society into a knowledge based technology service provider. It discovers the new IT elite at Makarere university and the "Silicon Valley" of Kampala. The film-crew joins charismatic individuals who bring IT to the most remote parts of the region.

From the slums of Nairobi to the villages at the border to Congo, this documentary explores how individuals, companies, universities and governments try to bridge the digital gap.
