As I Like It.
The new identity of Muslim Women in Germany
a muslim woman in Germany wearing the traditional hijab scarf tends to
make people see her as either a terrorist or a symbol of oppressed
womanhood, but she finds the experience liberating. A documentary on
strong muslim women in Germany - with and without hijab.
I lived in a traditional Turkish Family and went to a German school,
where I experienced free life I saw life! And home to me was no
life, recalls the Berlin-based lawyer oft Turkish origin, Seyran Ates.
She supports young women who are forced to marry against their choice.
A new generation of young Moslem women who grew up in Germany wants to
decide for themselves how to deal with religion, their own culture and
the expectations of their German environment.
I dont think, that somebody can tell me, what freedom means to me. My
way is my free choice, declares Sahar El-Quasem, a believing Moslem
who made the decision wearing the traditional hijab and her strong
faith for herself.
She is one of three women, publicnomad presents in his
documentary, women who make their own choices, emancipating from the
values of their parents as well as the prejudice of the Germans. The
third one is screenwriter Arzu Charkin, who commutes between Germany
and Turkey. Her message is the freedom of choice: to believe in
religion or not to believe, to wear the hijab or not, but never deny
oneself.
These three protagonists represent a new generation of Moslem women in
Germany. Women who provoke, because nobody can tell them who they are
or what to believe in, neither their brothers and fathers, nor the
Germans. Women who dont fit in any stereotype.
